While at a routine dentist appointment a few months ago, the dentist asked if Greyson’s doctor had ever said much about his tonsils being really big. Dr. Cook had mentioned it previously, but when we saw him next we asked about it and he said we should see an ENT doctor. When we visited the ENT doc, he recommended he have surgery to remove his tonsils, adenoids, and an ear tube that had not fallen out on its own. The concern was that he was a bad snorer and it disrupted his sleep. As he gets to be school age, the doctor thought we would start to see disciple problems resulting from poor sleep. If untreated, it could also limit air flow, reducing blood to the brain. Not enough to matter for short term, but could be a long term problem.
We decided to move forward with the surgery and it was done on December 7th. The surgery went well. The doctor showed us his tonsils after they were removed and they were big (about size of a grape). Doctor estimated they were about twice as big as normal tonsils. As predicted by the doctor, the first day or two were smooth sailing, and days 3-7 were rough.

My mom came and helped us for the first week. That allowed Paul and I not to have to take the week off work. Mom’s birthday was the following week so before she left she opened a few little gifts, with help from the kids.
He used pain medication for about 10 days before we totally weaned him. He was great as long as his meds had not worn off. I was not prepared for how tough the recovery was going to be for him, but looking back I think it is worth it. He does not snore anymore so hopefully he will sleep better for his lifetime.
